Background of the Study
Economic diplomacy has become an integral tool for fostering regional trade and economic integration. Within the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), member countries leverage diplomatic channels to promote trade liberalization, investment, and economic cooperation. In Lagos State, ECOWAS initiatives have played a pivotal role in enhancing trade connectivity and stimulating economic growth by facilitating market access and harmonizing trade regulations (Bello, 2023). These initiatives are designed to overcome non-tariff barriers, improve regional infrastructure, and encourage the free movement of goods and services. The region’s dynamic economic landscape is influenced by both political and economic factors, which drive the need for coordinated economic policies and diplomatic efforts. Economic diplomacy in this context involves negotiations, policy advocacy, and strategic partnerships that not only boost intra-regional trade but also attract external investments (Ajayi, 2024). By integrating diplomatic efforts with economic strategies, ECOWAS has contributed to a more resilient and competitive regional market. However, challenges such as regulatory discrepancies, political instability, and infrastructural deficits continue to impede the full realization of these objectives (Ogun, 2025). This study examines the role of economic diplomacy in promoting regional trade within ECOWAS, with a focus on initiatives implemented in Lagos State.
Statement of the problem
Despite significant progress through ECOWAS initiatives, regional trade in Lagos State faces persistent challenges. Inconsistent regulatory frameworks, infrastructural bottlenecks, and political uncertainties continue to limit the effectiveness of economic diplomacy in fostering trade integration. These issues hinder market expansion and the seamless flow of goods and services, raising concerns about the sustainability of current initiatives. This study seeks to identify and address the key obstacles in leveraging economic diplomacy to enhance regional trade (Bello, 2023; Ogun, 2025).
